Biography

Derek Harrington
Hailing from a uniquely gifted Dublin family Derek exploded onto the Celtic music scene over four decades ago, playing music with his brothers Richard, Robert and Paul and has since proven himself as a multi-talented musician, performer and producer.

In 1968, Derek formed the band "Na Sultoiri", with his brother Robert, Sean Og McKenna and Geraldine McGowan

The foursome had great impact, performing throughout Ireland and later touring North America taking up residency in famous Irish venues from New York to Toronto.

Derek moved to Canada in 1970, where he formed the folk outfit "North West Shovel Company" playing extensively across Canada, and became the resident band at the popular "Nag's Head" on York Street in Toronto.

He joined the Jimmy Carton Band in 1978, performing and producing a number of the Carton's acclaimed albums including the much revered "Macushla". See Derek performing Nancy Spain with the Carton Band

In 1991 Derek rejoined his siblings in Ireland to record the Harrington Brothers album "Monto On The Rock" (re released as "The Rare Old Times") highly acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic and featuring their powerful version of 'Molly Malone" adopted as the Leinster Rugby Team Supporter's Club anthem, and released as a single in January 2009.

Derek produced three albums for Newfoundland Celtic troupe The Irish Descendents, for which he received a prestigious Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammys) and multiple East Coast Music Awards.

On his latest album "Cape Spear"
Derek exhibits his songwriting skills, teaming up with talented lyricist Paddy Sullivan, and including collaborations with his brothers Paul and Richard. The album is dedicated to his brother Robert Harrington who sadly passed away in 2003.
